Amritsar (Panjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ; von Amrita Saras: "Nektarsee") ist eine Stadt im indischen Bundesstaat Punjab mit etwa 1.000.000 Einwohnern und das spirituelle Zentrum des Sikhismus (Goldener Tempel).

1577 wurde Amritsar von Ram Das, dem vierten der insgesamt zehn Sikh-Gurus, gegründet. Der alte Name der Stadt war daher Ramdaspur. Den Namen Amritsar erhielt die Stadt nach dem den Goldenen Tempel umgebenden Pool des Nektars (Amrit Sarovar).
Im Jahr 1919 ereignete sich hier das Amritsar-Massaker.
Am 5. Juni 1984, auf dem Höhepunkt von Unruhen zwischen Hindus und fundamentalistischen Sikhs, ließ Premierministerin Indira Gandhi den Goldenen Tempel von der indischen Armee erstürmen (Operation Bluestar). Dort hatte sich der militante Anführer der Sikhs Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale verschanzt. Die äußerst gewaltsame und umstrittene Militäraktion kostete circa 500 Menschen das Leben. Als mittelbare Folge wurde die indische Ministerpräsidentin am 31. Oktober 1984 bei einem Attentat getötet. Es wurde von zwei ihrer Sikh-Leibwächter ausgeführt. Die Bekanntgabe der Todesnachricht führte zu neuen Gewaltausbrüchen, bei denen allein in Neu-Delhi binnen drei Tagen über 4.000 Sikhs getötet wurden. Erst am Abend des dritten Tages griff die indische Armee ein und begann die Übergriffe auf Sikhs zu unterbinden.
Nordwestlich der Stadt befindet sich der internationale Flughafen Raja Sansi International Airport. Zwischen Lahore in Pakistan und Amritsar gibt es eine Busverbindung.
