Diena (deutsch: Der Tag) ist eine der auflagenstärksten Tageszeitungen Lettlands[1]. Das Blatt erscheint seit dem 23. November 1990.
Die Chefredaktorin von 1992 bis 2008 war Sarmīte Ēlerte (jetzt Kulturministerin im Kabinett Dombrovskis II).
Bis zum Millennium gab es neben der lettischen auch noch eine russische Ausgabe.
2002 musste die Zeitung eine Geldstrafe bezahlen, weil sie 1998 in Artikeln den damaligen Wirtschaftsminister Laimonis Strujēvičs kritisiert hatte. Die Geldstrafe wurde 2007 vom Europäischen Gerichtshof für ungesetzlich erklärt.[2]
Die Zahl der Abonnementen sank von 41471 im Jahr 2000 auf 18277 im Dezember 2009[3]
Der lettische Geschäftsmann Viesturs Koziols kaufte 2010 51% der Geschäftsanteile. [4]
