Juni 1839) “Löwe vom Punjab” war ein Angehöriger der Sikh und der erste Herrscher des geeinigten Punjab. Sein Grab befindet sich in Lahore in Pakistan. Sein Vater herrschte über ein Gebiet im westlichen Punjab um Gujranwala. Zu dieser Zeit war der Punjab in verschiedene Gebiete mit separaten Herrschern aufgeteilt. Im Alter von zwölf Jahren trat Ranjit das Erbe seines Vaters an. Nach mehreren Feldzüge einte er die verschiedenen Territorien und nahm am 12. April 1801 (dem Vaishaki-Tag) den Titel eines Maharajas an. Die Hauptstadt seines Reiches war seit 1799 Lahore. 1802 eroberte er die heilige Stadt Amritsar. In den folgenden Jahren führte er Krieg gegen die Afghanen und vertrieb sie aus dem westlichen Punjab. Er eroberte die Provinz Multan im südlichen Punjab und nahm 1818 Peshawar ein. Weitere Eroberungen waren Jammu, Kaschmir (1819) und die Gebirgsstaaten nördlich von Anandpur deren größter Kangra war. Durch angeworbene Söldner aus Europa gelang es ihm seine Armee zu modernisieren und damit die erste moderne indische Armee zu formen. Das Resultat war ein mächtiger Staat Punjab, der als Einziger nicht von den Briten kontrolliert wurde. Er brachte Recht und Ordnung und war für seine Toleranz anderen Religionen und Ethnien gegenüber berühmt. So schaffte er beispielsweise die “Jizya”-Steuer für Hindus und Sikh ab. Ranjit Singh starb am 27. Juni 1839 als gelähmter Mann (die genaue Ursache der Lähmung ist nicht bekannt). Sein ältester Sohn Kharak Singh trat das Erbe an. Der Staat zerfiel in der Folge durch Verrat und Intrigen sowie Mord an seinen Nachfolgern mehr und mehr. Die Armee und die Adeligen stritten um die Vorherrschaft bis zum Ende des zweiten Anglo-Sikh Krieges an dessen Ende es von den Briten annektiert wurde. Zu dieser Zeit herrschte sein jüngster Sohn Duleep Singh. Ranjit ist neben der Erinnerung als Schöpfer eines geeinten und mächtigen Punjab auch als Besitzer des Koh-i-noor-Diamanten bekannt. Sein schönstes und am längsten währendes Werk ist die Verschönerung des Harmandir Sahib, des größten Heiligtums der Sikh. Aufgrund der großen Mengen an Marmor und Gold die hierfür verwendet wurden ist es auch als Goldener Tempel bekannt. Der Titel Sher-e-Punjab (Löwe vom Punjab) ist noch heute eine Respektsbezeichnung für mächtige Männer.
